He holds a PhD in Addiction Neuropsychology (Goldsmiths College, University of London), a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology (the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience, King’s College London), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Neuropsychology (University of Glasgow). Dr Mayhew is due to complete the Post-graduate Certificate in Clinical Neuropsychology Practice in summer 2024 (the University of Bristol). He is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society.
Dr Mayhew has worked across outpatient and inpatient acute and rehabilitation settings, providing clinical neuropsychology input and consultation to help both patients and multi-disciplinary teams to better understand and mitigate the impact of cognitive and emotional difficulties. Dr Mayhew has extensive experience in neuropsychological assessment, across neurological conditions and levels of severity. He has particular expertise in deriving reliable cognitive profiles that provide the foundation upon which personalised cognitive and broader rehabilitation can be based, using thoughtful and innovative approaches to facilitate recovery.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Mayhew also has a strong, ongoing interest in clinical research, and has disseminated his work via peer-reviewed journals and oral and poster conference presentations. He has been the recipient of a number of academic and research awards, including an award for academic excellence in the final year of his undergraduate Psychology studies, and was the recipient of a competitive 1 + 3 joint multi-disciplinary studentship from the UK Economic and Social Research (ESRC) and Medical Research (MRC) Councils, to complete his MSc and PhD studies. As part of his PhD research, Dr Mayhew developed and published a scale to index fluctuations in state impulsivity (Mayhew and Powell, 2014), which can be used to measure aspects of rehabilitation progress.
